Nima turns a photo into a cartoon by redrawing the people or pets in it as characters in a look you choose, such as claymation, felted wool, paper cut-out, comic book ink, anime or pencil. Then it goes a step past a cartoon picture: the characters are animated in a short scene and speak with voices. It runs in the browser and the first video is free.

Most photo to cartoon tools are filters. They trace over the pixels of your photo, so the result is your photo with an effect on it. Nima works the way an illustrator would: it looks at who is in the picture and draws them again as characters, in the rules of the look you picked. Clay has fingerprints. Felt has fibres. Ink has heavy blacks.

The same two people in four looks.
One or two subjects. You and your partner, your kid and the dog, two friends. A cartoon of yourself works from a photo of just you.
Faces you can see. Sunglasses, heavy shadow and tiny distant figures all make a likeness harder.
A moment, not a pose. The scene and the lines are written from what is happening in the photo, so a candid picture gives Nima more to work with than a passport photo.
One photo makes one short clip, about ten seconds, square. Two subjects at most, so a group shot will not work. The background is redrawn in the look you pick, so it will resemble the place in your photo rather than copy it. Your first video is free; more are on a paid plan.
Upload the picture to Nima, pick a cartoon look, and Nima redraws the people or pets in it as characters in that look. You can stop at choosing the look you like best, or carry on and have the characters animated with voices.
Yes. One clear photo of you is enough. You will see yourself drawn in a few of the looks and can pick the one you like.
There are nineteen looks, including claymation, felted wool, paper cut-out, comic book ink, cel shaded anime, pixel art, watercolour, oil painting and pencil.
Both, in that order. The photo becomes a cartoon still first, and that still becomes the first frame of a short animated clip with voices.
That is the aim: likeness comes first and style second. Glasses, hair, clothes and build are carried over from the photo. Very stylised looks such as felt simplify a face more than pencil or comic book ink do.
